Challenge: Time Consuming, Manual, & Error Prone Network Operations
Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecommunications provider in Europe with over 200,000+ employees was faced with time consuming and error prone manual network operational processes for the configuration, maintenance, and lifecycle of their software upgrades. Needing to accelerate time to deliver services, a high demand was placed on the network engineering and operations team which resulted in excessive out of hours working patterns and manual errors.
They needed to minimize repetitive tasks to give the highly trained workers the freedom to spend their time on more complex work reflecting their skill level, and to transition to an agile development methodology for implementing network changes with best practices and collaboration across all teams using automation.

The rest of the business was placing greater and greater demands on the network teams. It was too much manual work to keep up with, resulting in rushed errors, which just created more delays.

Solution: Modular, Orchestrated Workflows with Itential
Deutsche Telekom leveraged Itential’s platform to improve and futureproof their software upgrade operational processes. The Deutsche Telekom network team was able to replace their manual process with modular orchestrated workflows to automatically update their configuration and maintenance requests across their entire network of routers, switches, load balancers and firewalls.
With Itential, they were able to automate and orchestrate end-to-end software upgrades at scale through our:
- Cisco Integration: Deep integration and support for Cisco NSO and support for all router device technologies.
- Out-of-the-Box Integration Capabilities: No-code integrations to more than 100 systems and the ability to auto-generate integrations for in-house developed systems, to automate the full end-to-end process from order request to order delivered.
- Configuration Management & Reporting: Robust pre- and post-check backup snapshots that provides simplified troubleshooting and a searchable audit log of activities.
- End-to-End Orchestration: Configuration of LAN devices (e.g. routers, switches, load balancers and firewalls) and the operational processes involved in upgrading the software on these devices.
- Self-Service Delivery: Portal that makes it easy for customers to request new services and receive them quickly.

With the help of Itential, we were able to successfully automate one of our most error prone processes and reduce the high demand that was placed on our network engineering and operations teams.

Increasing Efficiency & Reducing Errors Across Network Engineering & Operations Processes
With Itential and Cisco NSO, Deutsche Telekom was able to automate over 20+ command checks and robust validation steps to increase efficiencies across network engineering and operations. They reduced operational errors through the automation of previously 100+ pages of execution steps.
Deutsche Telekom was able to automate and orchestrate one of their most error prone processes and reduce the high demand on network teams as they continue to build out CI/CD pipeline integrations.
