Time Consuming, Manual, & Error Prone Network Operations
Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecommunications provider in Europe with over 200,000+ employees was faced with time consuming and error prone manual network operational processes for the configuration, maintenance, and lifecycle of their software upgrades. Needing to accelerate time to deliver services, a high demand was placed on the network engineering and operations team which resulted in excessive out of hours working patterns and manual errors.
They needed to minimize repetitive tasks to give the highly trained workers the freedom to spend their time on more complex work reflecting their skill level, and to transition to an agile development methodology for implementing network changes with best practices and collaboration across all teams using automation.
The rest of the business was placing greater and greater demands on the network teams. It was too much manual work to keep up with, resulting in rushed errors, which just created more delays.

Why They Chose Itential for Network Automation & Orchestration
Deutsche Telekom leveraged the Itential Automation Platform to improve and futureproof their software upgrade operational processes with flexible and extensible automations. The Deutsche Telekom network team were able to replace their manual process with a customized, automated workflow to automatically update their configuration and maintenance requests across their entire network of routers, switches, load balancers and firewalls.
With Itential, they were able to automate end-to-end software upgrades at scale through our:
- Deep integration and support for Cisco NSO and support for all router device technologies.
- No-code integrations to more than 100 systems and the ability to auto-generate integrations for in-house developed systems, to automate the full end-to-end process from order request to order delivered.
- Robust pre and post backup snapshots that provides simplified troubleshooting and a searchable audit log of activities.
- Rapid end-to-end automation of the configuration of LAN devices (e.g. routers, switches, load balancers and firewalls) and the operational processes involved in upgrading the software on these devices.
- Self-service portal, making it easy for customers to request new services and automate the full end-to-end process.
With the help of Itential, we were able to successfully automate one of our most error prone processes and reduce the high demand that was placed on our network engineering and operations teams.
