How Virgin Media O2 Automated DOCSIS Provisioning with IAP

Virgin Media O2 offers consumer broadband, TV, and phone services to over 46M customers across the UK. One of the key technologies they leverage to deliver these services is DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Systems Interface Specification), an internet over cable standard that enables much faster transmission rates.

The scale of their business means Virgin Media O2 has tens of thousands of DOCSIS serving groups across hundreds of CMTS devices. Before adopting Itential, provisioning a DOCSIS serving group required 300+ lines of config and involved multiple manual touchpoints across different roles. It was a time-consuming process with many opportunities for human error.

By leveraging the Itential Automation Platform (IAP) as the service orchestration layer and NSO as the network device orchestration layer, the team has been able to decouple manual touchpoints and automate the process with workflows and adapters.

This means design engineers can create IAP workflows to define design parameters. Backend engineers can leverage those and create jobs in IAP. Then, field engineers can execute jobs in IAP — allowing field engineers to self-serve instead of manually coordinating with others. DOCSIS provisioning is now streamlined and simplified, allowing the team to keep up with scale, provision new serving groups faster, and significantly reduce the risk of error.
