Operations Manager, the function of Itential that exposes northbound endpoints, only exposes a REST API endpoint and a list of variables for required parameters. As a result, a user or system would need some other way to understand the capabilities of the workflow, such as what changes it will make, to which systems, and how it will make the changes. There is no simple way to derive intent from a REST URL.  Intent-based systems, including NLP-based systems, require higher levels of abstraction that workflows do not inherently provide. Currently, there is no fully automated method to extract intents and entities directly from workflows. Instead, users must rely on manually creating intent definitions, or by using documentation, standardized frameworks, or semi-automated approaches.

Manual documentation involves explicitly defining workflows, their supported intents, and their entities. This approach, while precise, is labor-intensive and prone to human error. Alternatively, standardized frameworks in the telecom space, such as TMF921, a TM Forum Open API for Intent Management, provide a consistent and interoperable way to expose workflows. These frameworks streamline integration by using predefined schemas that external systems can easily understand.

Semi-automated methods, such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), offer another option. RAG models can analyze design documents and workflow metadata to generate an intent catalog, which external systems can reference. While RAG reduces the manual workload, its accuracy depends on the quality of input documents and often requires human validation.

Once the method for generating supportable intents from existing workflows is established, the information will be utilized by an Intent framework or an NLP framework, both of which translate high-level user requests into actionable workflows. This discussion will focus on the NLP framework, which typically consists of three components or functions:

  1. The NLP Processor interprets natural language inputs, extracting the user’s intent (e.g., “Increase bandwidth in Region A”).
  2. The Intent Catalog stores predefined intents, linking them to workflows or endpoints within Itential.

For example, a user request to “Allocate bandwidth to Region A” might be processed as follows: the NLP Processor extracts the intent, the Intent Catalog matches it to a predefined workflow, and the Intent Translation Function converts it into executable steps. This translated workflow is then executed by Itential.

Each intent also requires specific targets—the resources or devices on which the action will operate. Identifying these targets is often complex. Certain actions may be restricted to specific devices due to compatibility, compliance, or operational policies. Additionally, multiple intents might act on the same target, necessitating prioritization and conflict resolution. Itential users can address these challenges by embedding these constraints and conditions into the execution workflows. This way, when a workflow is triggered by an intent-driven request, Itential can perform the pre-checks to determine if the proper conditions exist for the actions to be performed safely.

The ability to define and abide by conditions, constraints, and policies that govern the execution of intent-driven actions is an area that, in general, is critical for operations of any production network and currently there are few tools that can provide this governance.
